Thermally modified Red “Adirondack” Spruce (P. rubens) top for Mandolin. This process, aka “Torrefaction”, involves heating the wood in a sealed, air-tight, chamber with near-zero oxygen to high temperature. The result is a very stable wood of a nice brown color and resembling old wood. Perhaps most important is the decease in damping (increase is sound velocity) that results from the process of thermal modification. The 3 photos of torrefied tops are for reference only – all tops are unique.
The current batch was sourced in Canada and was cut in 2024.
