Red spruce (Picea rubens) – aka “Adirondack” spruce guitar top – Grade B. We harvest this wood in our local Allegheny Mountains where it is found at elevations generally at least 4000 feet msl (1200 m.). All of our red spruce we find within 100 miles of our shop. Red spruce of the quality demanded for string instruments is very uncommon, and grading for grain spacing, color etc. is not as stringent as for our European (Carpathian) tops. This top is for small body guitar and each half is at least 7.75 inches (196mm) wide at lower bout.
